This opportunity is designed for candidates interested in building a career as a Project Scientist through structured training, hands-on field experience, and guidance from experienced environmental professionals. Project Scientists support commercial real estate evaluations by conducting property site visits, interviewing property contacts, researching environmental conditions and historical property uses, and preparing Phase I Environmental Site Assessment reports. Prior ESA experience is helpful but is not required for this training opportunity. Over approximately three to four months, participants will progress from foundational instruction and shadowing experienced assessors to leading site visits and preparing reports with increasing independence. Each participant will work with a dedicated mentor and receive ongoing technical feedback throughout the program. This is a remote, field-based position requiring approximately 50% local and regional travel. Candidates must be able to participate in in-person training associated with their assigned cohort and meet the position’s ongoing travel requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conduct commercial property site visits to observe and document existing conditions and potential environmental concerns. Interview property owners, managers, and other site contacts to gather information about current and historical property operations. Research and review historical resources, regulatory databases, property documentation, and previous environmental reports. Prepare clear, accurate Phase I ESA reports in accordance with applicable ASTM standards and EBI’s reporting requirements. Coordinate site visits and information requests with property contacts and project team members. Work closely with mentors and technical reviewers to incorporate feedback and strengthen research, field assessment, and report-writing skills. Manage assigned tasks and deadlines while maintaining accurate project records. Progress toward independent site assessments and report preparation as training milestones are achieved. Training and Professional Development The program combines formal instruction with practical assignments, including: Foundational training in Phase I ESAs, applicable ASTM standards, commercial property types, and environmental research. Instruction in EBI’s reporting tools and processes, including the Quire reporting platform. Initial site visits alongside experienced assessors to observe field practices and documentation methods. Opportunities to co-author reports and participate in detailed review sessions. Supported site visits in which participants take the lead while an experienced assessor provides guidance. Gradually more independent assignments as participants demonstrate readiness, with a target of independent work within approximately three to four months. Mentorship, report review, and professional support continue beyond the initial training period. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, architecture, construction management, or a related field preferred. Interest in environmental consulting, commercial real estate, and property assessment. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to organize research and field observations into clear reports. Attention to detail and the ability to evaluate information from multiple sources. Strong organizational and time management skills. Willingness to learn new software, apply technical standards, and incorporate feedback. Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating with mentors and project teams. Availability for approximately 50% local and regional travel and required in-person training. Experience in construction, facilities management, environmental services, engineering, or real estate consulting may translate well to this position. Candidates beginning their careers or transitioning from a related field are encouraged to apply.
